Sorry To Disappoint You

-a poem-

“What do you want to be when you’re older?” They ask.

I answer “hopefully something with writing but I don’t know.”

“What about money?”

“It’s a concern, that’s true.”

“You really don’t have a solid plan?”

“Not a clue.”

Sorry to disappoint you

“Got a boyfriend yet?”

“Nope”

This is a topic they always construe—

It appalls them that I’m single,

“What, a girl like you?”

They act like there should be a line of guys in queue.

In reality I’m only friends with a select few.

Sorry to, again, disappoint you

“College plans?”

“Not one, I want to travel and soak up the world instead.”

“Is that really smart?”

“Maybe, maybe not,

But I’m going to give it a shot.

I want to meet new people,

See oceans crystal blue.”

“Oh.”

Yeah, sorry to disappoint you

Why is it that once you reach a certain age you are expected to know your future without a doubt?

Why is it looked down upon to be a 17-year-old, un-kissed and single, still figuring this whole thing out?

To not have instagram,

Let alone a set college plan.

Can we stop with all the expectations for teens to have their lives together?

Every single adult has a storm they’re trying to weather.

Life is life, whether old or young—

The same song, in a different tune being sung

No one has it all together.

So lay off with all the pressure!

Just let me be

Blissfully me

The world is amazing and I’ve seen so little.

I want to watch every sunset,

Dance in every wave,

See every place,

Meet all the people.

I want to know it all, as in-depth as a fiddler the strings on his fiddle.

So no I don’t have a 5-year plan of my occupation,

I don’t have insurance or a retirement fund.

There are no college plans

I’ve never had a boyfriend.

But I plan to soak it all up, every river bend.

See the earth end to end.

Until all the experiences and memories,

All the chance encounters,

Stupid mistakes,

Moments full of laughter—

Into one beautiful story will it all blend.

This take on life is a rare one, the idea seems new.

You might not like it.

If that’s the case,

I’m sorry to disappoint you

But it’s my life not yours.

If you’re tired of these same answers I suggest you learn a new question.

There is no changing my mind.

This will never be something I outgrew.

I’m sorry—

So sorry—

—Sorry to disappoint you.
